Various Artists – Liquid Step

Hi guys, this is my first post. I hope you dig what I’ve got for you.

A genre which I’ve been listening to a lot recently is Liquid Step. It’s kinda like chilled out dubstep remixes, pioneered by Jakwob. I thought I’d bring you the six best tracks from the genre to get the ball rolling.

First up is a track by the aforementioned Jakwob. His remix of Alan Pownall‘s A Life Worth Living is, in my opinion, his best work, yet it remains criminally unknown. I really like the way he takes a few lines from the song and repeats them, it’s really effective.

It’s hard to mention dubstep without Chase & Status popping up. I went to see them recently and I only knew a couple of tracks from their album. It was probably quite a weird choice to go, but while I was there they played Hurt You, which I hadn’t heard before. It’s more relaxing to listen to than their other work on the whole and I’d go as far as calling it the best track from More Than Alot.

Next up is Broke DJs‘ take on DJ Shadow‘s Trip Hop classic, Blood On The Motorway. This is heavier than the other tracks in this post and sways towards more conventional dubstep, but it still keeps the light vocals and subtle tunes which are defining aspects of Liquid Step.

You can tell how big this genre is becoming from the fact that one half of Major Lazer and all round production superstar Diplo is getting involved. His remix of Ellie Goulding soundalike Sunday Girl is excellent and reminded me of the first track which I heard from the genre, Jakwob’s remix of Under the Sheets.

Radiohead are one of my favorite groups of any genre. Belgian producer Skamz, who only operates a Youtube page has remixed Street Spirit to excellent effect. I’d say this is the most danceable of the tracks I’ve selected.

I’ll finish up with something which I caught over at Feral Party Kids lately. This is Chicago based DJ Lambox‘s remix of Lux Aeterna is absolutely breathtaking, and is, as far I’m concerned, head and shoulders above any other dubstep remix of classical records. It’s recognisable as the theme from the movie Requiem For a Dream.

I hope those tracks spark your interest in this genre, and I will post any others I find in future here. Please do comment below with any other recommendations from this genre too.

  3. Goddamn, that Radiohead disting and that Shadow rejam are the biz.

    Very nice, thank you!

  4. This is why I love Vacay Vitamins… Everytime i’m in the mood for a certain genre or just wanting to expand my horizons you guys nail it on the head. Liquid DnB and Dub is amazing music, and I just can’t get enough. The Lux Aeterna remix I heard over on FPK as well a little bit ago and holy cow is that not the most amazing dub remix of a more classical track? Amazing. Keep it up guys! LOVE IT!
