I began college in Orlando, Florida in the Fall of 2006. Soon after my arrival, I learned that one of my roommates was from Miami and had a deep love for something called “electronic music”. At the time, I knew very little of the genre and was very intrigued. He gave me a shit ton of music and I decided that it was something I might get into although I wasn’t completely sold yet. This would change very quickly.
At the recommendation of my roommate, I had the great fortune of attending the Bang Music Festival in Miami on November 11th, 2006. The DJ’s at the event included Tiesto, Sebastian Ingrosso, Cedric Gervais, Austin Leeds, Roger Sanchez, Markus Shulz, and last but certainly not least, DAFT PUNK.
Throughout the day I made my way from stage to stage checking out the DJ’s and loving everything that I saw and heard. When it came to the closers,Tiesto and Daft Punk were playing at the same time. At the time, I had heard a lot of Daft Punk songs but had no idea what they were like live (I know, I know). Some of my friends were huge Tiesto fans and convinced me that Tiesto was the person that I wanted to see.
After about 30 minutes of Tiesto killing it, I decided that I would make it over to Daft Punk to see them begin their set. I had seen enough of Tiesto and decided that Daft Punk might be kinda cool live. This would turn out to be one of the greatest decisions that I have ever made.
If you have ever seen videos of what Daft Punk are like live, you will know that they DJ from the inside of a gigantic pyramid. When I arrived at the stage, the pyramid was covered by a large tarp and I had no idea what to expect. After waiting around for about 10 minutes the tarp was removed and light began to emanate from the inside of the pyramid. A sound began to blast out of the speakers that I can only describe as a robot mixed with an alien. As the sound began to increase in intensity, the lights continued to flash faster and faster until “Robot Rock” finally escaped from the speakers and I was literally blown to the ground.
What would follow would turn out to be possibly the most amazing and entertaining hour or so of my life.
I completely and fully blame Daft Punk for my love of electronic music and since that concert I have seen dozens upon dozens of shows from Justice, MSTKRFT, Diplo, and Boys Noize to Steve Aoki, the Bloody Beetroots, Carl Cox and A-trak. I have also made a point of taking as many videos and pictures at all of these events and currently have a vast library of both from 2006 to the present. I plan to share these with all of my fellow Vacayers so stay tuned as I plan on periodically uploading my favorites for all to view and cherish.
