Every Vacay has a villain and their certainly was a villain at Starscape Vacay 2010. Personally, I have never had a pleasant experience with MC’s and therefore I try to stay away from stages with MC’s. However, for some stupid reason their was an MC for Sub Focus’s set. Not only was this MC really really bad, he was really really angry. As a result, Sub Focus’s entire set was eclipsed with sounds and noises that were not in the english language and didn’t follow a rhythm. As a result, MC “Too Angry For Words” was the Vacay Villain for stealing Sub Focus’ set.
Now onto the Most Valuable Vacayers (MVV). Wolfgang Gartner will take MVV slot numero uno for saving us from Sub Focus’ botched set. Rusko will take MVV slot numero dos for just being that much better than everyone else. Lastly, Pretty Lights will take the last slot for putting on a show that was well-rounded and felt like one long song.
Wolfgang Gartner
This man brought the pain and the dutch house to bmore. Pretty standard/classic set by Wolfgang. He mostly played his own tracks/remixes including Flashback, Yin, Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony, Undertaker, and Fire Power.
- David Guetta - Memories (Armand Van Helden Vocal Remix)
- Calvin Harris - Flashback (David Guetta Remix)
Rusko
Rusko set the bar for dubstep last night and it was pretty fucking high. He was scratching (like Craze), beat-juggling triplets, throwin in samples, and jumping up and down like a mad man. Im convinced he no longer just uses Traktor & cdjs. It’s evident that he has moved onto Live, and mastered it in no time. Other than one very noticeable hick-up, Rusko’s set was by far the best of Starscape (the sound quality was untouchable, leavin me thinkin he had to be using Live). I’ve been going through hardcore withdrawal the past two days as rusko’s strechy basslines have been on repeat in my head. Rusko, if your reading this, Baltimore loved you too and we look forward to seeing you in Septembaaaa.
- Rusko - Woo Booost
- Rusko - Da Cali Anthem
- Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say (Rusko 'Come Ere And Say That' Remix)
Pretty Lights
It was my first time seeing Pretty Lights and after everything that I’ve heard about him, I was pleasantly surprised. He had the best orchestrated set at Starscape as it felt like one long ride. Yes, most of the drops were very nearly identical but that adds to the unity of his set. His set had ups and downs all without losing any energy (something every dubstep artist at Starscape didn’t understand except Rusko). He was also rocking a lot of new tracks/samples that aren’t up on prettylights.com, like that M.I.A. Hit That/Paper Planes “Zoom Zoom Boom Boom” craziness that he ended on at Coachella.
