WMCay + Ultra Recap (Electro, Dutch House, Dubstep, much more)

WMCay 2010 at miami was absolutely incredible and eclipsed my wildest imaginations and expectations. In terms of music, if i had to some up everything in one word it would be Dubtch.

Day 1 Recap

Most Valuable Vacayers (MVV): Wolfgang Gartner

As most people probably weren’t adventurous enough to go out on tuesday night WMCay Day 1. Fellow dirty dancers, troy + jonah, and I decided to start the week right with Mansion Loves Electro. Troy + Jonah decided to get there ass shake started at Louis but since Manny, the door guy, hates me I decided to venture over to Mansion by myself to catch all the acts. $50 later I entered miami’s mega club Mansion for what proved to be an epic night. Japanese Popstars were killing it with some heavy electro as I walked in but it was Mr. Gartner who stole my soul by literally only playing his songs. His sound created such a high energy and somehow he was able to maintain it throughout his entire set. It was quite incredible honestly, Deadmau5′s sound with a glitch feel. Gartner single handily made my night and got me over my disappointment of missing Nero and all my other misfortunes (snuck backstage pretending to be part of Benny Benassi’s entourage, started talking to him about Vacay and realized I can’t understand a word coming out of his mouth).

Sidenote: MSTRKRFT brought the same noise and set they did last year…. annoying. Benny on the other hand was solid and release a bunch of new tracks and even had some guest appearances by lil jon (found out hes short) and Kelis.

Day 2 Recap

MVV: Sub Focus, Jack Beats, Breakage

WMCay day 2 I met up with my fellow dirty dancers and made our way to White Room, which basically turned out to be our go to spot, props to OVERTHROW for putting it all together all week. The amount of talent in this grimy venue was mind blowing and yet it was as laid back as a house party. Cramming 3 stages (1 outside) proved to be a plus, as we could bounce around from stage to stage anytime we wanted a change in pace. Sub focus was probably my favorite of the night as he single handily made me a believer in drum and bass. Dropping a drum and bass version of his track “could this be real” and then bringing it back to dubstep and then taking it through a narly breakdown and back into drum and bass. He continually kept this act up during his entire set as everyone was hoping up and down at 140 bpm+ throughout his set. Another artist worthy of mention was breakage. As he “rewinded” almost every other drop. The headliner of the night was Jack Beats and I’ve never seen em before so I wasn’t sure what to expect but yet again they added to the long list of artists dropping jungle and dutch house at WMCay.

Jack Beats Vitamins

  • Jack Beats - Get Down (VIP Edit)

Breakage Vitamins

  • Breakage - Hard (Caspa & The Dub Police Takeover Remix)

Day 3 Recap

MVV: Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Laidback Luke, Duck Sauce, Busy P, Dj Mehdi, Aeroplane

This was probably my favorite day of all and probably the longest as we headed over to Hard around 3ish and didnt get back until 7ish. The day started out with the infamous first ever Hard WMC event at blade @ the Fontaine bleau Hotel beach resort. I happened to know this place like the back of my hand and it proved handy as tickets have been sold out for a while and I needed 4 of them. We schwiefed our way into this event perfectly as boys noize and erol alkan began their set. Beside the fact that the ugliest girl that was at the pool party kept getting onto stage and disrupting my view of boys noize, this event was a complete success although I still wish bacardi did the event so we didnt have to run to our car for swigs of alcohol.

Boys Noize & Erol Alkan Vitamins

  • Boys Noize & Erol Alkan - Lemonade
  • Boys Noize & Erol Alkan - Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)

Plus aeroplane played my favorite tracks of theirs.

baby WMCay + Ultra Recap (Electro, Dutch House, Dubstep, much more)

I was already planning on going to the free Busy p vs Dj Mehdi event @ Bar but since he told me that if i wore my sombrero he’d buy me drinks, I was much more eager to attend. This place added to the trend of grimy spots and was much shadier than white room. Nevertheless, the music was amazing and Busy p dropped dubstep making me a very happy vacayer.

Busy P Vitamin

  • Drumsound & Simon Bassline Smith - R U Ready (Dubstep Mix)

DJ Mehdi Vitamin

  • Surkin - White Knight Two (Laidback Luke Remix)

On our 15 block hike back to our hotel we decided to take a little detour and check out a supposed Vacay at a warehouse hosted by A-trak’s label Fools Gold. We have a saying that there’s no time on vacay and believe it or not we found this place as Ducksauce (A-Trak + Armand Van Helden) performed their world premier set.

Duck Sauce Vitamins

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll (A-trak Remix)
  • Duck Sauce - Anyway
  • Mr. Oizo - Gay Dentist (JFk Edit)

After completely being blown away at 5 am in an empty warehouse with an unreal lightshow, A-trak anounces a special guest….. none other than Laidback Luke. He began his physical assault on the audience using jungle beats, dry bass, compressor, and dutch house. I don’t remember much as brain had melted by now, but I do know that laidback luke can not be trusted with a stack of subwoofers.

Laidback Luke Vitamins

  • Laidback Luke - Blogger
  • Laidback Luke - My God
  • Congorock - Babylon
  • MSTRKRFT ft John Legend - Heartbreaker (Laidback Luke Remix)

Laidback Luke’s Live Set From Sao Paulo Brazil (1-30-2010)

If you look closely, at around 14 secs into the video you can see A-trak spitting game to a bitty and closing within a min and dippin w/ her. Good work amigoo! Warehouse RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

We finally made our way back to the hotel only to continue the destruction laidback luke had began, as we took revenge on our obnoxious russian roommates by blasting music at around 7 am.

Day 4 Recap

MVV: Fake Blood

It was finally time for Ultra and the juices were pumping after a day & night full of vacay destruction. I missed out on Boy 8-Bit and Alex Metric, but lucked out to catch Fake Blood’s entire set. In my opinion, Fake Blood was the best of Ultra (both days). Enough said.

Fake Blood Vitamins

  • The Kills - Cheap And Cheerful (Fake Blood Remix)
  • Fake Blood - The Dozen

Yess, that crazy man starting all the chants and ranting at Fake Blood is me. TAKKKKE MEEEE!!!!!!!

Day 5 Recap

MVV: Swedish House Mafia, Crookers

My goal was to go back and forth between two stages (Biscayne and Bayfront). That never happened as I got sucked into the mosh pit at the Bayfront stage. As a result I missed Pendulum, rusko, glitch mob, planet of the drums, skream, sub focus, benga, freq nasty, nero, but I got a brief view of bassnectar. Although nearly ever drop would result in mayham, crookers took their set to another level and just put it together better than any other artist on that stage. As a result, they marinated the crowd for the slaying by the beetroots first ever live set, which was not at all what i expected. I had no idea Bob Rifo was gonna whip out a guitar and play a piano solo etc etc. However, I did expect the excessive yelling that Steve Aoki’s presence would bring.

Crookers Vitamins

  • Douster - King Of Africa
  • Crookers - Il Cattivo Plus Thunder
  • Miike Snow - Silvia (Savage Skulls & Tony Senghore Remix)
  • Crookers - Knobbers

Swedish House Mafia Vitamins

  • Swedish House Mafia - Gangsta
  • Swedish House Mafia + Laidback Luke - Leave The World Behind

Beetroots Vitamins

  • The Bloody Beetroots - Domino

P.s. Stanton Warriors were really good.

Day 6 Recap

MVV: Afrojack

The infamous Beatport pool party took place at the gansevoort, my favorite hotel on the beach, and the line wrapped around the block. Not many people at this event knew much about anything electro let alone dutch. As a result, some people were in for a scare as Afrojack came on and decided to terrorize the lovely mixture of guidos
and cougars.

Afrojack Vitamins

  • Tocadisco ft Nadia Ali - Better Run (Afrojack Remix)
  • Afrojack - Bangduck
  • Jason Derulo - Watcha Say (Afrojack Remix)
