We’re pretty much half way through 2010, which is pretty unbelievable. To celebrate the occasion, I thought I’d round up my top six mashups of the year. Like one a month, except I can’t guarantee when exactly in the year they were made. What I do know however is that they have been produced in 2010.
To set the ball rolling I’m going to include the track which inspired me to right this post. Chi Duly has just dropped his latest project Octobers Very Cold, which mashes Coldplay & Drake. The standout track is The Fly Scientist, one of the most accomplished mashups in a long time, this sounds so good. It could work on its own and be pretty succesful.
Next come the Hood Internet, kings of the mashup. They have produced the incredible mashup which I’m about to bring to you, which is among my favorite ever. R Kelly vs Major Lazer sounds like a pretty wacky combination, but it works so damn well. Ignition isn’t a track I really like but it is a classic nonetheless. This mashup takes the words, combines them with a sick tune & beat to make an absolute dancefloor killer. Play this track in any city in the world and the dancefloor will be full straight away. To me this is better than either of the original, but I don’t think RnB fans will agree. Nonetheless, everyone will say it’s a superb track.
The next track is by a less familiar artist. I introduce you to the Mashmaticians, who are responsible for the excellent Roc Juice, combining Jay-Z & Symbol One. Hearing Jigga get mad over crazy french house is quite strange but it is a pretty cool mashup, which does work well.
Ha! Yes has recently risen to prominence through a series of excellent mashes. The two tracks he uses here will be more familiar individually to readers than any of the other mashups. Calvin Harris‘ smash Acceptable In The 80′s meets Twista‘s Overnight Celebrity in dancefloor killing fashion in this mix. As a big fan of both of the originals I wasn’t sure about putting them together but this proves me wrong.
BrandX was unknown to me before his excellent three-way mashup between Queen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jay-Z. With the amount of 99 Problems mashups out there, the new one’s have to be pretty special to catch the ear. This is, with an excellent build up of Queen drums with Chilli’s guitar, before Hova starts to spit all over the place, to remarkable effect. It was a challenging track to take on but BrandX has made it his own.
Finally up is a peculiar meeting of Stevie Wonder and Jay Sean. Downtight shows what a good track Down could have been, with an excellent beat but shocking vocals. However, Stevie sorts all that out here, with the words from Up Tight, with the chorus a particular highlight. Props go to Chambaland for setting this one up.
All in all they are the best mashups this year as far as I’m concerned, although there are some pretty good contenders. The Hood Internet are undoubtedly rule the mashup world, with three of their tracks in contention. Have a look at their Soundcloud for more. Happy listening!
