The better question is what is vacay?
It began with the man in the white pants who took a liking to meditation. Or maybe it was with the Incredible Hulk. To be honest, as is the case with many weekends, we’re not sure. What we do know is what it became. An aspiration, a mission, a lifestyle. More specifically, the lifestyle. The canonic work-hard play-hard mentality taken to its extreme; Vacay in the face of obligation – in spite of it even.
But Vacay is not an off-the-grid, disregard-the-working-world mentality. Rather, it’s an alternative embrace of it, bridging the gap of what can and cannot be done. On Vacay – with Vacay – the stresses of the real word do not cease to be, they’re simply accepted, absorbed into the timeless orientation of priorities. And a Vacayer never leaves a to-do list undone.
For some, the spontaneity of it can be frightening, overwhelming, irresponsible and, ultimately, unfathomable. For the believers, it’s a higher reality; one achieved on the basis of getting it done because it has to be. There can be no other ending. How we get there, however, is up to us.
